RPTA's "Stampede" Celebration of Department Status

After 30 years as a program in two different departments, it's official...we have department status, and it's time to celebrate! The Recreation, Parks. & Tourism Administration (RPTA) Department invites all students, parents, alumni, faculty, and friends to a reception at Hotel Corque in Solvang on Thursday, October 8, 2009 at 5:30pm followed by a Vince Gill concert at the Chumash Casino. OUTSTANDING FACULTY ADVISOR WINNER ANNOUNCED

Recreation, Parks and Tourism Administration faculty member Cynthia Moyer has been selected as the university's 2007-08 Outstanding Faculty Advisor. Moyer's nominations depicted her robust contribution to not only advising in her department, but to her college, the university, and on a national level. She was described in nomination letters as knowledgeable, skilled, encouraging, approachable, and "the glue that keeps us together...a well rounded source of information coupled with genuine interest for any student." The Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award was developed to recognize outstanding achievement by a faculty member in the area of student advising.

Goldenberg Co-Edits Book on Safe, Eco-Friendly Hiking and Backpacking

Recreation, Parks, & Tourism Administration professor Marni Goldenberg along with co-editor Bruce Martin, a professor at Ohio University, have teamed together as members of the Wilderness Education Association for this book entitled, "Hiking and Backpacking." The book was published by Human Kinetics and intended as a resource for first-time hikers and backpackers and a textbook for outdoor recreation courses in higher education. See full press release

Teaching with Movies

Movies as a Teaching Tool: Goldenberg Publishes Innovative Book

Marni Goldenberg, a member of the Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration faculty, is co-author of "Teaching With Movies: Recreation, Sports, Tourism, and Physical Education." The book is intended to encourage the use of movies in the classroom as teaching tools and illustrates how movies can be used to enhance learning.

The book is the result of more than two years of research conducted by Goldenberg and Teresa O'Bannon, a former Cal Poly professor who now teaches at Radford University in Virginia.

New Ecotourism Opportunity for REC Students

The Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration program at Cal Poly has joined The International Ecotourism Society, allowing Cal Poly to offer the prestigious University Consortium Field Certificate. Cal Poly is only the fifth university nationwide to offer its students this certification.
Students on Coastal Bluff“We believe this certificate program gives our students a unique advantage in positioning themselves for careers in the tourism field, and we -- as a program -- hope to further contribute to the relationships among universities, communities and tourism that The International Ecotourism Society is working to create, maintain and improve,” Greenwood said.
